Principal's Message

Dear Westbury Middle School Families, Scholars, Teachers, Staff and Community Members,

Welcome to a year of immense fortitude, collaboration and excellence as we forge on to bring in September 2024!  I am extremely humbled and honored to be the principal of such a great school with great leaders, teachers, staff, scholars, caring families and community.

The new school year is almost here. We want to assure you that when we do return to the school building we are poised to implement our action plan of professional learning, explicit and coherent instruction aligned to the standards and the needs of our children. Professional Learning Communities, coherent curriculum, academic monitoring and lesson studies will be the tools we use to take Westbury Middle School to the next level of continued greatness. Westbury Union Free School District enjoys a rich history of collaboration and cultural excellence that is the result of a collegial partnership between the District Leaders, our Board of Education, school staff, parents, community members who will continue to provide a wealth of experiences for the scholars.

Our scholars will continue to have opportunities to join My Brother’s Keeper, My Sister’s Keeper and benefit social wellness services by our Counseling Team. The scholars will also have opportunities to join the STEAM Club, Robotics, Debate Team, Jazz Band, Cheerleading, Sports, Musical Theater, Visual Arts, Chorus and much more! We are also thrilled to announce our Newcomers Club will be available for scholars to join as we take intentional steps to embrace the diversity within our District and promote equity and inclusion for all.

This year’s greatest initiative will be to continue to make strategic and purposeful decisions as a community to ensure that our children are moving closer to reading on grade level. Literacy will be our focus. Our collaborative decisions will enable all of our scholars to have complete access to a rigorous and enriching curriculum. Our goal is to prepare the scholars for high school, college and beyond. The educational programs will continue to be academically challenging to engage each scholar by connecting the curriculum to a variety of topics and cultural experiences in each subject area as we close the learning gaps. We need the support of the families to trust and support us on this journey.

The scholars will be very excited to further explore new ideas and concepts that will be facilitated by their teachers during this school year. Parents, teachers, support staff, and the Professional Learning Teams will all have an important role to ensure that learning is consistent and supported. We are here to encourage our children to become active learners. It is our sincere desire to provide expanded opportunities for our scholars to acquire the skills to become productive citizens in our competitive society.

We are confident that we can make our school culturally responsive, inclusive and develop an ambitious community of learners. Our school's immense character is built upon the strength of our values within our D.R.A.G.O.N. Pride: Determined, Resilient, Ambitious, Growth Mind-Set, Open-Minded, Nurturing.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you!  A special “Thank you” to our Superintendent, Dr. Tahira A. Dupree Chase, Our Assistant Superintendents, Ms. Robin Barnett, Dr. Roger Bloom, Mr. Brendan Gallivan, Ms. Mary O'Neill, our dedicated Board of Education and our Community Leaders and Partners.
