Where This Vision Comes From

Westbury Union Free School District is an IB World School (opens in a new tab), guided by the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile, a global framework founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 and now shaping nearly two million students in more than 160 countries. At Westbury, it guides scholars continuously from grade 6 through graduation. Its ten attributes, including inquirers, thinkers, and communicators, describe the kind of learner an IB education develops.

In July 2025, the Board of Regents began requiring every New York State district to define its own Portrait of a Graduate (opens in a new tab): a clear statement of what a student should demonstrate the moment they earn a diploma. The state's own framework, adopted as part of the NY Inspires initiative, describes six interconnected attributes grounded in Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education. This is the mandate that started it all — everything below is Westbury's answer to it.

Westbury's answer is the Westbury Scholar 2030, married to the state's requirement and built on the IB foundation already guiding our scholars. This is Westbury's own Portrait of a Graduate. It's our promise that every graduate leaves ready for both what New York expects and who Westbury has already shaped them to be. One practical note: adopting the state framework does not change current diploma requirements. Statewide alignment begins with students entering 9th grade in 2029–30.
