Reporting a Case
Updated Westbury School District COVID-19 Protocols, Effective August 31, 2022
A. Masking and Physical Distancing:
The Westbury School District continues to be a “mask optional” school district and it is still recommended that physical distance be at-least three feet as reasonably as possible at all Westbury schools and office settings.
B. Notification of a Positive Case:
The district continues to use a digital intake form for reporting student and staff positive cases. Individuals will need to provide their date of birth, address, phone number, date of positive case, building location, and a picture/document of the positive test result. C. Isolation for Individuals Who Test Positive for COVID-19:
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 will be required to isolate for a minimum of five (5) days, regardless of vaccination status. If symptoms persist, further isolation will be required; otherwise, she/he may attend work or school after the 5-day isolation period
D. Release from Isolation:
The district continues to use a digital release process for individuals to return to school and work after the minimum 5-day isolation period. Individuals will need to upload an Affirmation of Isolation letter from a local Department of Health, as well as an attestation that the individual does not have any symptoms and has been fever-free for seventy-two straight hours. If symptoms persist, an individual may need to isolate for a longer period. Once the form is completed, a digital notification will be sent clearing the individual to return to school/work. As per the New York State Department of Health and New York State Education Department, individuals who are released after the 5-day minimum isolation period are required to wear a mask in all settings on days 6-10.
E. Contact Tracing and Daily Notification of COVID-19 Cases:
The Westbury School District will continue contact tracing to identify possible close contacts, but this will continue to occur during the regular school hours. If a positive case is reported at night or on the weekend, the contact tracing will occur the next school day. At the elementary school level, contact tracing will continue through notification by the school nurse. At the secondary level, notification will be made on a case-by-case basis. F. No More Quarantining for Possible Close Contacts
A close contact is defined as being within three feet of a positive case for more than fifteen cumulative minutes on a given day, within a 48-hour period prior to the individual testing positive for COVID-19.
If a student or staff member is identified as a possible close contact to a positive case:
- The individual can remain in school/work as normal, regardless of vaccination status.
- It is recommended that the individual wear a mask for 10 days.
- It is recommended that the individual test twice during the 10-day period.
- If symptoms should develop, the individual who has been identified as a close contact should remain home and test.
G. International Travel:
The district continues to follow the CDC recommendations for international travel as part of our COVID-19 protocols. The CDC continually updates recommendations and if you are traveling internationally, please check the CDC website below prior to leaving and before returning to the United States:

H. COVID-19-Like Symptoms and a PCR Test
If an individual is experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms and has taken a PCR test, she/he cannot return to school/work until a negative result is presented.
I. Expired- Mandated Testing of Staff
The Commissioner’s Determination on COVID-19 Testing, dated September 2, 2021, has expired and staff who were mandated last year to test weekly, are no longer required to do so.
J. No More Weekly Health Screening Application and Temperature Scanning
The district will no longer be implementing temperature scanning upon entrance to school buildings, as well as no longer requiring staff to complete a weekly health screening.
- It is the responsibility of each staff member to monitor her/his own health and follow up with a medical professional if experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms. If you are experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms, it is your professional responsibility to follow the district protocols.
- Families are being asked to monitor the health of their children and follow up with a medical professional if they are experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms. If your child is experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms, we ask that you keep your child home and follow the district protocols.
K. COVID-19 and Moving Forward During the 2022-2023 School Year
Although these protocols are being adopted for the start of the 2022-2023 school year, the district will be continually monitoring the positivity level in the schools, community, and state-wide. Should the district conclude that there is an uptick of cases, any of these protocols may be modified and any prior procedure(s) may be reinstated. As per the standard nursing guideline, an individual with an undiagnosed rash is not allowed to enter the school grounds and buildings. If you should develop a rash, please stay home and immediately contact a health care provider. As per the Nassau County Department of Health, if there is a case of monkeypox in the district, there is no community notification (compared to the daily notification of COVID-19 cases). Should you have any questions about monkeypox, please contact the school nurses in each building.

Mask Requirement

Dear Westbury School District Families and School Community,
I trust that you have enjoyed a restful Winter Recess. As we transition into the second half of our 2021-22 school year, we are met with new COVID19 procedures and protocols.
On Friday, February 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a statement lifting its recommendation for mask wearing while riding the school bus. Yesterday, February 27, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that masks will no longer be required in New York State schools, effective Wednesday, March 2. While I am pleased at Westbury School District’s response to all COVID19 procedures and believe wholeheartedly it was our collective effort that made our schools and offices safe throughout the pandemic, I am acutely aware that there are some within our school family who may have health challenges and wish to continue to wear a mask.
Effective Wednesday, March 2, the Westbury School District will adhere to a “mask optional” environment. In a “mask optional” environment, it will be up to each individual student, with guidance from their parents; faculty, staff members and administrators to decide for themself whether or not to wear a mask while in our schools. Should we notice a sudden increase in positive COVID19 cases at our schools or in the community, we will immediately pivot to a “mask requirement” environment once again. As the nation shifts from pandemic to endemic, we will begin to methodically revisit our other existing COVID19 procedures and protocols. Any decisions that we make regarding future COVID19 procedures will be made in collaboration with our Board appointed medical providers and based on CDC and New York State Health Department guidance.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, all of you, for your patience, grace, and flexibility during this most uncertain time. Our brilliant scholars and their families have been amazingly compliant to our strong COVID19 protocols. Moreover, our administrators, staff and faculty have taken on an unimaginable role during the pandemic. I could not be prouder of their thoughtfulness in keeping our schools clean and our scholars safe. As a school family, we did what was necessary to safeguard the health and safety of every member of our beloved Westbury School Family.

Dear Westbury School District Families and School Community,
The Westbury Union Free School District has been closely monitoring the actions taken by the New York State Attorney General’s office regarding Judge Rademaker’s ruling on the state mask mandate. Yesterday, we received notice that New York State has been granted a stay of Judge Rademaker's ruling, pending the outcome of the appeal filed in New York State appellate court. In compliance with the law, the Westbury School District will continue to enforce mandatory mask wearing for all scholars, staff, faculty and administrators while in our schools, offices and workspaces. I humbly thank you all for adhering to our mask requirement during yesterday’s public confusion.
Throughout the health pandemic, the Westbury School District has been ahead of the curve in implementing and adhering to strict health and safety protocols. As I have stated in the past, we will continue to “walk the talk” and do all that is necessary to keep our scholars and all employees safe. We will continue to be in close contact with our legal team and will keep you updated on any future developments. Thank you for your continued trust and support of our school district. Dear Westbury Families and School Community,
Welcome to the 2021-22 school year! I am honored to have been selected to serve as your Superintendent of Schools and lead the Westbury School District into its next chapter. Despite the once-in-a-century global health crisis, this year promises to be exciting and filled with opportunities for growth.
I know, as of late, the reopening of our beloved school district has been in your heart and on your mind. Please know, we have been working diligently to identify best practices to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our schools and offices. Studying the guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Nassau County Department of Health (NCDoH) and our district physician, the Westbury School District is poised to bring all students and all staff back to school for in-person instruction, beginning September 1.
In developing mitigating protocols and procedures for our district, parents, union leadership, administrators, health professionals, teachers and community members worked collaboratively to review and devise a Reopening Plan. The plan includes, but is not limited to, mask/face covering requirements, physical distancing implementation, cleaning protocols and social-emotional support. The health and safety of all members of our school community will remain our top priority. While I understand we are experiencing a once-in-a-century global crisis, you should know the Westbury School District will continue to follow the recommendations of the CDC, AAP, NCDoH and health professionals to keep our teaching and learning environment safe for all.
You should also know that we have identified Dr. Roger Bloom, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel, as the districtwide COVID-19 Coordinator. Dr. Bloom will be the direct liaison between the school district and the Nassau County Department Health. In reporting a positive case of COVID-19 within our school district, Dr. Bloom will adhere to COVID-19 Reporting Guidelines recommended by the CDC. Westbury Families and School Community, on September 1, our beautiful and brilliant students will be returning to school with excitement and some anxieties. Let’s work together to decrease student anxieties and increase excitement. Our school-based pupil personnel team is always available to provide social-emotional support to you and your family. Our custodial team have been working hard to prepare our schools and offices for full usage. Our administrators have been creating an environment that is warm and inviting to our students. Our dedicated support staff is waiting for our halls to be filled with children so that they may support their growth and development. I am confident our teachers will return on August 30 eager to prepare lessons and activities to help our children acclimate to the full return to school. I ask that you please review our safety protocols with your children and familiarize them with the expectation to keep themselves safe and healthy, as well as others. Our school board and administrators arecommitted to reviewing our Reopening Plan regularly to determine when and if it should be updated.
In the coming days, you will receive a packet from your child’s school that details pertinent information to help your child get a great start to the new year. You are encouraged to read the information thoroughly. Should you need clarification or have questions, please contact your child’s school.
Once again, I am thrilled to serve Westbury Union Free School District and begin working with students, families, community and staff. Working together as partners at this important moment in history will help our children to achieve their dream. I look forward to seeing your child for in-person instruction on September 1.
