School Board Adopts 2.0% Tax Levy Budget

Last evening the Westbury School Board adopted the proposed budget for the next school year. The tax levy was kept to 2% although, under New York State law, the budget could have been as high as 2.48% and still would have been in compliance with the 2% cap.

According to the School Board President, Dr. Pless Dickerson, " We went with the 2% tax levy budget out of consideration to the community taxpayer while attempting to maintain the integrity of our instructional program."

The Business office has finalized the proposed Budget Information and all the information is posted on our website.

Joanny Gomez, Dryden Street Teacher, honored as Educator of the Month - Video now available

To view the presentation, click the headline to open this article and then follow the link at the end. Last month, Joanny Gomez, a teacher for 18 years at Dryden Street School, was honored as Educator of the Month by Dowling College and Cablevison's News 12.

The award was presented by Dr. Clyde Payne, Dowling College's Dean of the School of Education. According to Dr. Payne, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, we look forward to honoring the best of the best. Every school has those special teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty and make a difference in the lives of their students. Each year Dowling College and New 12 Long Island recognizes those unique educators who add value to the community's success."

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Clark-Snead, Superintendent of Schools, Mary Lagnado, Assistant Superintendent for Business, Floyd Ewing former School Board President, Jay Marcucci, Director of Technology, Dale Telmer, Principal of Dryden Street, Teresa Grossane, Assistant Principal of Dryden Street School, Christine Corbett, Vice President of the Westbury Teacher's Association and several colleagues and relatives.

Lady Dragons and Westbury Basketball Scholar/Athletes Shine at the 26th Annual Reid Robeson Basketball Classic

On Saturday 2/4/12, at the 26th Reid Robeson Classic hosted by Westbury High School, the Lady Dragons defeated Clarke High School 41-27. The charge was led by the Scholar Athlete winner, Renee Watson who recorded her first double double with 10 points and 20 rebounds. Danielle Ramsey had a monstrous game with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals. Kayla Bomani led all scorers with 11 points and also 6 steals. Melissa Eustache contributed with 6 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals as she rounded off the Fabulous Sophomores. Kailin Mitchel chipped in with 2 three point shots and 5 steals. Sabrina Guerrier, Raynasha Noel and Ashley Horton contributed with valuable minutes as 8 players playing as 1 team.

During half time of the girls game, a public service announcement was provided by the South Shore Outdoor company who has sponsored the Reid Robeson Classic for more than a decade. The announcement was presented by A.C. Resnick of the South Shore Outdoor company. His message was that three children are injured in automobile accidents due to driver texting every 5 minutes in the United States and that no one should text while driving. To symbolize the children, three young Westbury fans were selected by Mr. Doric Capsis/ Director of Athletics for the Westbury UFSD. Mr. Resnick provided each of his 3 young assistants with a complimentary NBA beach towell, which brought a smile to the recipients. South Shore Outdoor sells imprinted sportswear, athletic uniforms and equipment, and trophies/plaques. They are located in Bay Shore, NY and can be contacted at aresnick@southshoreoutdoor.com. Dr. Constance R. Clark/ Supterintendent for the Westbury UFSD attended the game and assisted with this important public service announcment that was presented to the Reid Robeson Classic spectators.

The Reid Robeson Classic honors Mr. Martin S. "Bunky" Reid who graduated from Westbury High School, then returned as an english teacher, NYS champion boys basketball coach, and Assistant Principal for Westbury High School. Mr. Reid began this event in honor of Paul B. Robeson who was the first African American to receive an athletic scholarship to Rutgers University. He became the Valedictorian of his Rutgers graduating class and earned a law degree from Columbia University. The Reid Robeson Classic is held in February in conjuction with African American History Month. One student from each of the six participating teams is presented a plaque prior to their designated game signifying this scholar/athlete has the highest grade point average on his/her team. The six teams and scholar/athlete winners who participated in this years event were: Westbury boys junior varsity basketball-Anthony Preston III, Carey boys junior varsity basketball-Matt Robison, Westbury varsity girls basketball-Renee Watson, Clarke varsity girls basketball-Demi Shanahan, Westbury boys varsity basketball-Giordan Walker, and Carey boys varsity basketball-Shawn Mason."

Parent & Student Portal Now Open for the High School

The Westbury School District is pleased to announce the opening of the Infinite Campus Parent Portal for the High School. Infinite Campus is a web based student management system that will permit parents/guardians with Internet access to view their child's School Calendar, Schedule, Attendance, NY State Assessment Scores, Secondary Progress Report and Secondary Report Card.

Each High School parent or guardian is being provided with a Portal Activation Key to generate a secure user id and password. These Keys are being mailed out to the home address you have specified in your child's registration.

There is a planned expansion of the service so that by the end of the school year parents of grade 6 -12 students enrolled in the district will be able to view their children's recorded activites. Elementary parents will be added to the system for the Fall opening of school.

A Student Portal has also been opened for the High School Students. Students have their own user id and password to view their information. Students and parents see the same information except that parents will see ALL the students in their household.

PBC News is a bi-weekly student news broadcast featuring the talented kindergarten, first, and second grade students from Park Avenue School in Westbury, NY.

The call letters are PBC which stand for Park Bear Cubs. Kindergarten, first, and second grade anchors and reporters are building reading skills, developing public speaking skills, improving self-confidence and social skills, learning about potential careers, learning how to collaboratively solve problems, and are encouraging positive behavior for all students at Park Avenue School.

The crew of second grade students (behind the scenes) are assisting in the creation and production of each broadcast as photographers, videographers, and audio technicians.

Gerriann Bernacke, Drexel Avenue Teacher Wins Contest for School

Little Miss Matched, a store in the Roosevelt Field Mall, partnered with Donors Choose (an organization that provides an avenue for public school teachers to submit project requests for the specific materials their students need to learn..donors choose which projects to support. and once a project is funded, they deliver the materials directly to the school). Little Miss Matched selected 4 local teachers who had posted projects on Donors Choose to feature in a contest. Each school had a poster placed in the window. Shoppers were able to vote for whichever school they wanted to. The store had a total of $500 to give away. Our school received the most votes and as a result earned $320 for Ms. Bernacke’s classroom!! The teacher will use the money to purchase a document camera.

Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilwoman Viviana Russell Visit Dryden Street School

The excellent work Ms. Donna Sabella does extends beyond the walls of her own classroom. Her hard work benefits students in the after-school program and because of her efforts we have an incredibly active Parent/Teacher Association. Not only that, but she spends a lot of her own money out of pocket so her students will have the supplies they need. Special thanks to Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilwoman Viviana Russell for helping coordinate the surprise visit at Dryden Street School.

New Computer Labs in the District

Through purchases completed over the summer by the Technology Department, Park Avenue and the High School have received new "State of the Art" Computer labs. These labs feature 30 21 inch iMac student workstations and a Smart Board
for the teacher.
