About Our School
Children in grades three through five attend Powell's Lane Elementary School, which is recognized as a 2000-2001 Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.
Concern for the individual child is our underlying philosophy. The three year sequence of study focuses on building skills in reading, science, social studies and mathematics, while broadening each child's horizons through specialty areas including art, music (instrumental and vocal), health and physical education. We utilize the services of a librarian and have an extensive collection of books and other media resources spanning the reading and comprehension levels of all students.
Computer literacy is a vital element for the future success of our students. Students at Powell's Lane are learning the skills necessary to progress into the next century. Each year we have a Career Day program, in which guest presenters from various field conduct workshops with our students. Children are afforded the opportunity to see the link between school and the work world. Numerous multicultural programs linked to community service organizations provide students with a greater awareness and broader perspective of the world around them.
Experimental learning is another hallmark of Powell's Lane. Students expand their horizons by visiting such places as Brookhaven Lab, the NY Hall of Science, The Museum of Natural History, Sagamore Hill, and other sites of educational value. Throughout the school year, students engage in hands-on science activities. Each year we hold our annual Science Exhibit. Children demonstrate and explain their science projects using the skills they have learned.
Help-A-Family is an outreach program that provides help to needy families and instills empathy and good citizenship in all students. Additionally, the Extended Day and Saturday Academy programs strengthen and reinforce students' skills and provide the vehicles to make permanent changes in their attitudes towards life and learning.
Powell's Lane students are consistent winners in the annual Newsday Stock Market Game. Through participation in this competition, students build teamwork skills and learn valuable strategies for financial success.
