Lady Dragons and Westbury Basketball Scholar/Athletes Shine at the 26th Annual Reid Robeson Basketball Classic

On Saturday 2/4/12, at the 26th Reid Robeson Classic hosted by Westbury High School, the Lady Dragons defeated Clarke High School 41-27. The charge was led by the Scholar Athlete winner, Renee Watson who recorded her first double double with 10 points and 20 rebounds. Danielle Ramsey had a monstrous game with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals. Kayla Bomani led all scorers with 11 points and also 6 steals. Melissa Eustache contributed with 6 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals as she rounded off the Fabulous Sophomores. Kailin Mitchel chipped in with 2 three point shots and 5 steals. Sabrina Guerrier, Raynasha Noel and Ashley Horton contributed with valuable minutes as 8 players playing as 1 team.

"The three children pictured were Westbury fans who attended the Westbury Varsity Girls game vs. Clarke High School on 2/4/12 and who were each recipients of a free NBA beach towel courtesy of South Shore Outdoor




During half time of the girls game, a public service announcement was provided by the South Shore Outdoor company who has sponsored the Reid Robeson Classic for more than a decade.  The announcement was presented by A.C. Resnick of the South Shore Outdoor company.  His message was that three children are injured in automobile accidents due to driver texting every 5 minutes in the United States and that no one should text while driving. To symbolize the children, three young Westbury fans were selected by Mr. Doric Capsis/ Director of Athletics for the Westbury UFSD.  Mr. Resnick provided each of his 3 young assistants with a complimentary NBA beach towell, which brought a smile to the recipients.  South Shore Outdoor sells imprinted sportswear, athletic uniforms and equipment, and trophies/plaques. Clark/ Supterintendent for the Westbury UFSD attended the game and assisted with this important public service announcment that was presented to the Reid Robeson Classic spectators.

 

The Reid Robeson Classic honors Mr. Martin S. "Bunky" Reid who graduated from Westbury High School, then returned as an english teacher, NYS champion boys basketball coach, and Assistant Principal for Westbury High School. Mr. Reid began this event in honor of Paul B. Robeson who was the first African American to receive an athletic scholarship to Rutgers University.  He became the Valedictorian of his Rutgers graduating class and earned a law degree from Columbia University.  The Reid Robeson Classic is held in February in conjuction with African American History Month. One student from each of the six participating teams is presented a plaque prior to their designated game signifying this scholar/athlete has the highest grade point average on his/her team.  The six teams and scholar/athlete winners who participated in this years event were: Westbury boys junior varsity basketball-Anthony Preston III, Carey boys junior varsity basketball-Matt Robison, Westbury varsity girls basketball-Renee Watson, Clarke varsity girls basketball-Demi Shanahan, Westbury boys varsity basketball-Giordan Walker, and Carey boys varsity basketball-Shawn Mason."
