A Message from the Interim Superintendent of Schools
The Westbury School District has continued to focus on enhancing curriculum and instruction in response to the New York State Education Commissioner's emphasis on School Reform and College Readiness. Through intensive analysis of test results and targeted instruction to enhance testing outcomes, we are preparing students to be more successful than ever on the state assessments. Our teachers have been working hard on revising curriculum to align to the new national core standards, and our students have been working hard to achieve great results on this year's exams.
As we enter our school year 2012-2013, the Westbury School District, like districts throughout New York State, is facing a projected state aid loss due to the state budget shortfall. With Nassau County districts anticipating a possible 11% state aid loss and a tax cap of 2%, this year's school budget process presents significant challenges. And, while most other districts have seen enrollment decline, Westbury continues to be impacted by increasing enrollment. We are concerned that the projected state aid loss will cause an increase in class size and impact programs. Our current enrollment is 4,584 students.
Amid these budgetary constraints, we remain committed to maximizing our resources to provide the best possible instruction for students without added cost to the taxpayer. We are exploring consolidation of services and working with other school districts to identify further cost-cutting measures through shared services. While we remain focused on properly preparing our students from an instructional standpoint, we remain committed to controlling costs, and we are sensitive to the needs of the taxpayers of our community. We thank all members of the community for your continued support and look forward to a successful school year.
