Students at Drexel Avenue School have been learning about the history of our United States Flag during library classes as Mrs. Matarazzo took them on an historical journey of the evolution of the flag.

On June 14th-Flag Day- Veterans from our Nassau County Veterans Association came to present their program honoring our flag.  Under the direction of our music teachers Mr. Brenner and Ms. Gagliardi , the students in Mrs. Wedra, Mrs. Boston, and Mrs. Weiner’s classes performed two beautiful patriot songs to honor our flag.

Drexel students wore red, white, and blue and the school was buzzing with excitement. Students learned about the symbol of the flag and the veterans shared personal accounts of how they honored the flag while serving our country.  It was a successful program and one that reminded everyone of the sacrifices that so many made so that we can enjoy the freedom that America has to offer today.

A Trip to Carnegie Hall

Powell’s, Drexel, Middle School and High School orchestra students took an amazing journey last week to see the Sphinx Orchestra perform at Carnegie Hall. They got to ride the train, 'hang out' in Penn Station, walk the streets of NYC and sit in the first and second rows of Carnegie Hall. Nadine Schalk, the HS orchestra teacher, orchestrated this amazing evening of music and memories and those in attendance cannot thank her enough for doing so. We were even able to get a few pictures with one of the viola players from the orchestra after the show! A wonderful experience for all indeed!

Drexel Avenue Hispanic Heritage Celebration 2012

March of Dimes

On Friday, October 31st, Drexel Avenue School participated in a fundraiser for the March of Dimes. It was called the Wonder Walk which was a mini-walk modeled after the March of Dimes for Babies Walk. As a school we raised over four thousand dollars which was the most money raised in Nassau County during the March of Dimes Campaign. As part of the celebration many of the children came to school dressed as their favorite book character while they walked two miles around our Adopt-a-Trail. This event helped educate our children to the importance of community service and volunteerism. Students were educated on how this event and funds raised would help stop pre-maturity and save babies lives. The children enjoyed this event and look forward to participating in other events like this in the future. Mrs. Hall’s class has been recognized for fundraising over five hundred dollars for this event.

Senator Jack Martins Visits Drexel!

From the Senators Website:

Senator Jack M. Martins continued his tour of the schools in the 7th Senate District by visiting the Drexel Avenue Elementary School in Westbury. Senator Martins met with Principal Dr. Wanda Toledo and Westbury School Superintendent Dr. Constance Clark-Snead before visiting with three of the classes in the school.

The Drexel Avenue School students not only learn in the classroom but they also learn about community service. Drexel Avenue School students are raising money for the Fisher House Foundation, which provides housing for families of military veterans who are receiving treatment at the Walter Reed Medical Center. With such projects, students at Drexel are receiving a complete education where they are learning academics in the classroom and learning how to contribute positively to society.

Senator Martins met with three classes with students having the opportunity to ask him questions about his role in the State Senate and current issues. Students asked well-thought out questions regarding funding going to school districts and the state budget. Senator Martins explained that the state has to stop spending more than it takes in, a trend that the Senate is working with the Governor to end.

Questions also revolved around what challenges a State Senator faces, how technology has changed government and Senator Martins goals. Senator Martins said that his goal is to work toward improving the state’s financial situation. He also responded to a question about his favorite genre to read being history and his favorite historical figure being George Washington.

“I was extremely impressed with the students of the Drexel Avenue School. They asked questions I would expect to get from a civic association and other elected officials. There was a question from a student about my favorite part of being a Senator and it would have to be visiting schools and listening to the questions and concerns of our young people,” said Senator Martins. “I have been impressed with all of the education taking place at every school I have visited in the Seventh Senate District and the Drexel Avenue School is no exception. It is a wonderful school with well-rounded students. I applaud the efforts of Dr. Toledo and the staff.”

The students in Ms. Schiller’s class asked the Senator important questions using an online presentation tool called Prezi.Watch the presentation below.
