2011 Junior Varsity Boys Soccer Team
The highlight of the fall, 2011 athletic season has been the Junior Varsity Boys Soccer team who completed the season with a record of six wins, three losses and four ties. They have been coached by Christopher McCann. Coach McCann is a licensed Health and Physical Education teacher who joined the Westbury UFSD this year as a full time Physical Education substitute at Drexel Avenue School. He coordinates the lunch recess program which includes soccer games during the outdoor months of recess. Coach McCann describes his coaching beginning at Westbury: “I could not have asked for a better group of boys to welcome me to the district, and the Westbury Soccer Program. From the first day of summer workouts, this group of young men have accepted me with open arms and really made me feel like I belonged here at Westbury. They took the tactics I provided to them to heart and combined that with their skills, resulting in our success this year. This team is made up of dedicated players who give everything they have on a day to day basis. They know that I expect nothing but their best, and they expect the same from me. They also know that their hard work will take them to new levels, both on and off the field. “

Varsity Boys Soccer Head Coach Chris Valentini has placed an emphasis on sportsmanship since he took over the reigns of the Varsity Boys Soccer team in 2003. His teams have won the Conference Sportsmanship Award six times from 2003-2010 and they won the prestigious Nassau County Officials Association Vincent Mori Memorial Sportsmanship Award in 2009 (given to only one team out of 56). Coach Valentini has successfully imparted this sportsmanship emphasis to Coach McCann and together they stress on a daily basis to be good people, and “win, lose or draw as champions”. These players have run with the motto and have taken it to heart. When they win, they do so graciously and leave the field hungry for more. When we lose or draw, we learn from our mistakes and try to become better for the future. I would like to thank both the JV and Varsity squads for brightening my day for the past two months. I can honestly say that every day I look forward to coming up to the high school and coaching these young men. They make me smile, laugh, and remember what it is like to be a part of a family through soccer, as I have been in the past. I hope they have learned as much from me as I have from them, and I look forward to a bright future ahead for Westbury Soccer.”
Christopher McCann graduated from Adelphi University in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in both Health and Physical Education. He has four years coaching experience for a private company called Coastal Soccer Training. This included soccer training of, groups, teams, goalkeepers and special needs players. His playing experience includes two years on the Valley Stream South High School Varsity Boys Soccer team where he started at goalie. He led his 2006 Valley Stream South High School team to a Conference and Nassau County Championship. During that year he led Nassau County in shutouts. He went on to play college soccer for the Adelphi University Men's Club Team as a starter for four years. Coach McCann continues to play in tournaments and various men's leagues when possible.

A team must compile a cumulative team grade point average during their sport season of 90 or above to qualify for the award which is given out by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). Peter Degere who taught PE at the Drexel Avenue School was the coach of the Softball team. The NYSPHAA issues a certificate to the school and gold enameled Scholar/ Athlete pins to the members of the team. Mr. Doric Capsis, Westbury UFSD Director of Athletics presented the pins and certificates to these two teams.

Westbury Green Dragon Owen Skeet
Dominates the Fall Cross Country Season
For the past three decades, Westbury High School has been a power house in the sport of track & Field. During the past two years one of Westbury's athletes, Owen Skeete has excelled tremendously in the program. He has achieved many medals as well as recognition for being the first major distance runner at Westbury, and also for his unique running style. He likes to run hard from the front of the race which is not the norm for distance running. As a result this past Cross Country season has been his best season at Westbury so far.
As some may know Cross Country and track are almost two different sports. Cross Country is longer running and also has obstacles such as extreme weather, sandy courses, mud, and hills. Head coach Donald Ross, has given Skeete demanding workouts to help Skeete overcome these obstacles. As a result Skeete has been in Longs Island's “Newsday “almost every week of the fall season.
During this season Skeete has traveled up to Brewster, Pawling, and even to Sunken Meadow in Kings Park, to race against some of the top runners in New York State. At each one of these events Skeete has won an individual first place title. This moment of winning did not stop there, he also is one of the Section VIII, Nassau County Champions, where he set the Westbury school record and also left the field from the start and finished with a 12 second lead in the time of 15:47.9. From there he went to the New York State Championship meet and placed 7th, where he also tripped and still got up to finish the race. At the New York State Federation meet he redeemed himself placing 6th in a field of public and private schools, which had 287 competitors in the race.
Skeete progressed so much this past season that he also represented us in the Footlocker NE (Northeast) Regional. This meet has a field of 189 boys who where the top boys from each state from Washington, D.C. to Maine. He placed 22nd which is the best anyone from Westbury High School has done for at least 30 years, expressed by Coach Ross. Skeete said “This is the first season he leaves without any regrets”. This was a wonderful way for him to end the season at Westbury High School. The senior now will start winter track which is his favorite season. Many of these meets will be at the “Armory track” in Manhattan in the upcoming weeks.
“Westbury Varsity Girls Swim team is on the rise”
Four years ago, the Westbury High School Girls Varsity Swim Team began. That team competed with a roster of only six girls and did not win a single meet. The team has since grown to a roster of twenty-six girls and finished the 2010 season with a record of 3 wins and 4 losses. The team has grown in skill level as well.
The team posted victories over West Hempstead, Hempstead, and Freeport and also had their first County Qualifier and Conference Champion in freshman, Danielle Ramsey. Ramsey achieved numerous Conference and County honors. She competed in almost every event this past season during the dual meets. The two events she excelled in were the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle. Danielle Ramsey quickly became a girl in which Conference 1 teams took notice of. With numerous victories in her events during the dual meets, she finished her freshman swimming season by taking 9th place in Nassau County in the 100 Free and 15th place in the 50 Free. She also has been named the Conference Champion in both events as well as achieving 2nd place in the Division in the 100 Free and 3rd place in the Division in the 50 Free, which earned her "All Division" in both!
Danielle has started her high school swimming year on a very high note and her coache sees only more success in her swimming in the future, hopefully making the New York State Championships in the years to come!
Westbury junior, Antigua Rosario started swimming for the team in her freshman year and learned the butterfly and became the team's top 100 butterfly competitor for the past three years. She has continued to excel and was awarded "All Conference" honors in her event, the 100 butterfly, achieving 2nd place in the conference. She was also a part of the "All Conference" 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay. She was accompanied by Danielle Ramsey, Gloria Diaz, and Joyous Pierce. The team's 400 free relay also achieved "All Conference" honors, made up of Ibrianna Cohen,
Roxanna Lira, Keyry Alvarez-Carcamo, nad Katherine Alvarado. The team's success could not have been possible without all twenty-six girls. The team's sportsmanship was recognized by the officials of Nassau County and was voted second place for sportsmanship in the entire league. This has been the girls best season to date and they are committed to working hard to become even better in the future! Ten graduating seniors will be missed: Keyry Alvarez-Carcamo, Katherine Alvarado, Kathy Canales, Eliana Orduna, Diana Joseph, Jiminique Lee, Tanisha Robotham, Yvette Johnson, and the captain of the 2010 swim team, Joyous Pierce. These girls have shown the underclassmen on the team what a team should be like and our captain has truly demonstrated what it means to be the captain of a team. Congratulations to all of the girls on a successful season!
11/4/2010 Westbury Varsity Football Team is in the Playoffs,
“The Westbury Green Dragon’s varsity football team finished the season with a 4-4 record that earned them the 8th and final playoff spot in Section VIII’s 8 game playoff format. Westbury will be playing Carey at Carey High School on Saturday 11/6/10 at 3:00PM. Carey finished the season undefeated 8-0 to earn the 1st place playoff spot. The 1st place team plays the 8th in the quarter final round in the current format.
Westbury reached the playoffs by defeating Roslyn, Great Neck South, Jericho (forfeit), and Valley Stream Central. Three of Westbury’s victories were at home including the dominate homecoming game victory over Great Neck South. The game that eventually gave the Green Dragons the power points they needed to earn the 8th position was their 24-21 victory vs. Valley Stream Central. This game was played on 10/22/10 on a brisk Friday evening at Westbury High School in front of large and enthusiastic Westbury crowd. The game was a back and forth battle with Westbury starting out with a lead and then falling behind late in the fourth quarter. The Green Dragons executed an exciting drive in the last two minutes to score the final touchdown that led them to victory. 2005 was the last time Westbury was in the football playoffs.
All support at this upcoming playoff game is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to the Coaches and Student/Athletes of the Westbury Varsity Football team on reaching the playoffs.
Wilson Turning Heads On, Off the Field
By Shawna Ryan | Wednesday, November 3rd

My sideline story this week comes from Westbury High School, where I was introduced to what the football program there called "a Renaissance Man."
Brandon Wilson is a top-notch football player. This season he's had 100 carries for 855 yards and 9 touchdowns, 15 receptions for 227 yards and two touchdowns, and 51 tackles at linebacker on defense.
"As a football player he is par excellence," says head football coach Michael Burgur. "We think he's on of better the backs in Nassau division 2. He's a great leader and he's our captain."
And the other guys on the team say his leadership has carried them through the last four seasons.
"On the field Brandon is a great leader," says wide receiver and defensive end Edwin Jean-Baptise. "He makes you want to play better."
"Brandon helped me in my first year in football," says Chance Watson. "He'd tell me the rules and he always told me what to do and not to do and to keep my grades up and stay out of the hype."
Congratulations Again Westbury Track Class AA Champions!

Once again, the Westbury High School Boys Track Team and Girls Track Team performed exceptionally well at the Nassau County Class AA championships at Mitchell Field complex on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 26. And once again, the boysare Class AA Champions. And, the girls did very well also, with 3rd place. Congratulations to these outstanding student-athletes on winning multiple championships and consistently making Westbury so proud!

Former Westbury Track Star Alan Nimblette competed for SUNY Albany in the Mens 4 X 400 later in the evening. The track at Madison Square has four lanes and has banked curves at each turn. It was an exciting race that featured Westbury anchor runner Darnel Mickens closing in on Half Hollow Hills West rapidly during the last lap. Westbury’s next competition will be the Conference Championships that will be held at St. Anthony’s on February 3, 2010 at 6:30PM.”

Goals #1, #2, #3, #5 scored by Ritzi Contreras
Goal #4 scored by Maribel Vanegas
Westbury Goalies: Laura Sanchez (9th grade)
Goal #3 was a highlight: Penalty kick taken by Suleyma Argueta (10th grade). Suleyma had a beautiful shot over the “wall” of girls created for as a defensive tactic. From there, Ritzi Contreras carried the ball into the net by heading it in which made the score 3-0 at that point. Although a very physical game, the girls kept their focus and never forgot about sportsmanship. This further illustrated why the team won the team sportsmanship award last season.
Meet the Captains
Ritzi Contreras (12th grade) Ritzi was chosen as captain this year due to her dedication and love for soccer. Ritzi is at every practice and is continuously giving 110%. She responded to this role and its responsibilities by coming forward with positive motivation and tips for her teammates.
Shante Bethea (11th grade) Shante was chosen as a captain this year for her strong leadership skills. She is not afraid to step forward and get her team in line. Also, Shante only joined the team last year, and has shown nothing but dedication since. Dispite an injury to her knee last year, Shante has pushed forward and continues to grow each day.
Laura Barthelemy (11th grade) Laura was chosen as a captain this year for her continuous dedication to the team. Laura steps up to the plate to take on everyday responsibilities of the team. She also speaks to her teammates to keep them motivated and keep their spirits up when the game is getting tough. Laura has been called a “track star” in the past, but as the seasons go on, I find that she is using her speed to execute plays on the soccer field and has earned the name “soccer star” as well.
Coach's Insight
The girls have a real drive this season. Besides the growing number of girls coming out for the team, I have noticed that they really want to learn more about the sport and are willing to put more time into practicing when needed. Being with this program for two years now, I only see it moving up from here. If the girls keep showing the dedication that they have been this year, it will only lead to more victories in the future!

REID-ROBESON BASKETBALL CLASSIC AT WESTBURY HIGH SCHOOL SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2009
12:00 PM GIRLS VARSITY vs. MANHASSET
2:00 PM BOYS JV vs. LONG BEACH
4:00 PM BOYS VARSITY vs. LONG BEACH
Athletic and academic achievers will be on display at Long Island’s Westbury High School Saturday, February 7. The event is the annual Reid-Robeson Basketball Classic, starting at noon. The annual classic is sponsored by the athletic uniforms retailer South Shore Outdoor.
One player from each team will be honored before each game for academic achievement. It’s been part of the event since the inaugural more than two decades ago.
Admission is $5. Proceeds support a college scholarship fund for a graduating Westbury High School senior in the name of Martin S. Reid, the creator of the Reid-Robeson games. Reid, former Westbury boy’s basketball coach and assistant principal, created the event in 1986 as the Paul Robeson Games. He had in his mind a concept of “the ultimate body and the ultimate mind.”
Reid’s model was Paul B. Robeson, the actor, singer, scholar and athlete. Before his performing days, Robeson excelled in football, basketball, track and field and boxing. He was a valedictorian of his class at Rutgers University in New Jersey and received his law degree from the Columbia University. The entertainer and activist died in January 1976, and the first Robeson Classic coincided with the 10th anniversary of his death.
Reid, a 1969 graduate of Westbury High, earned his bachelor of arts from SUNY Oswego and received a master’s in school administration. A secondary-school English teacher, Reid was appointed acting assistant principal at Westbury in 1985 and got the post permanently in 1988. He became the varsity boy’s basketball coach in 1979, leading the squad to a 1985 state title as well as numerous league championships and playoff berths. He died in 1993, and his name was added to the Robeson Classic in 1994.
Westbury boys win 2008 Chaminade Christmas Tournament
Congratulations to the Westbury boys varsity basketball team for its victory over the previously undefeated and top-ranked Chaminade High School during the annual Chaminade Christmas Tournament. Four teams (Manhasset, Half Hollow Hills, Chaminade and Westbury) were battling for the championship.
In the first round, Westbury defeated Manhasset 67 to 46. The Green Dragons broke open a close game when they exploded for a 25 to 12 fourth quarter. Paris Abrams hit all four of his 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and Josh Core added 13 points and 8 rebounds.
In the championship game, Westbury played its best basketball to defeat the #1 ranked team on Long Island. The Dragons steadily pulled away with their quickness and depth, and consistently came up with clutch baskets every time Chaminade mounted a rally. Westbury lead 36 to 28 at the half. In the third quarter a 3-pointer by Lamard Herron and a put-back by Josh Core increased the lead to 16 points, but Chaminade answered with a big run to cut the lead to 4 points with five minutes remaining. Brian Hailey hit a beautiful spinning move in the post to increase the lead to 6 but Chaminade fought back again, cutting the lead to 2 with just two minutes left. The Westbury players kept their composure and a steal by Tyrece Redd pushed the lead back up to 6. A Chaminade 3-pointer cut the lead to 3 with less than 30 seconds left, but two free throws by Lamard Herron iced the game. Herron finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and was named the tournament MVP. Paris Abrams added 13 points and was named all-tournament.
"This is the first time we've beaten Chaminade in my 20 years at Westbury," said Coach Dave Graff. "The Green Dragons are now 5 and 1 and are looking forward to a successful season."
