Westbury Varsity Baseball Completes Series Sweep

During the week of April 26th, 2010, the Westbury Baseball Team completed a two game sweep of league opponent Sewanhaka. In Game 1, Sophomore Billy Casseus threw a complete game 7 innings, to lead the 7-2 victory. During the process he allowed only 5 hits, striking out 9 batters while only surrendering 1 earned run. The offensive support came from Ralph Davis who went 3-4 with a 3-run home run in the second inning and a 2-run double in the sixth inning. Brandon Mapp was also a key contributor going 3-5 with a double and scoring 2 runs.

Game 2 took place at Westbury and marked the final home game at the long time High School field which will be moved next year due to construction at the high school. It was a special day for the seniors and they were all instrumental to the 7-3 win. Senior left handed pitcher Nick Arevalo was on the mound and matched teammate Casseus with a complete game of his own, also allowing only 5 hits and striking out 9. Senior second baseman, T.K. Potter went 3-4 with 2 runs, a triple, an RBI and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot to lead the offensive attack. With the game tied at 3 in the sixth inning senior first baseman Trey Mujica made two picks on balls in the dirt to end a potential rally by Sewanhaka. In the bottom of the sixth senior Designated Hitter Serge St. Preux hit what would prove to be the game winning RBI double to left-center field, scoring Carlos Viquez from first base. Ralph Davis added 2 more insurance runs with a 2-run single to finish off the sweep. Westbury has three series remaining with Lawrence, Elmont and Roosevelt as they push for their first winning season in over a decade.”

“The Westbury Varsity Boys Track 4 x 400 relay Team took home second place medals at the 103rd  annual Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on January 29, 2010."

The field of teams in this race included: Brentwood, Freeport, MacArthur, North Babylon, and Half Hollow Hills West who had a 3:31.61 first place time that  edged out Westbury who finished with a 3:32.58 time.  Former Westbury Track Star Alan Nimblette competed for SUNY Albany in the Mens 4 X 400 later in the evening.  The track at Madison Square has four lanes and has banked curves at each turn.   It was an exciting race that featured Westbury anchor runner Darnel Mickens closing in on Half Hollow Hills West rapidly during the last lap.  Westbury’s next competition will be the Conference Championships that will be held at St. Anthony’s on February 3, 2010 at 6:30PM.”

“Westbury Wins Millrose Trials 4x400M Relay"

Congratulations on the Westbury Boys Track winning the 4x400M Relay for Section VIII at the Millrose Trials. The relay team consisted of Jair Edwards, Wayne Stewart, Rani Nimblette & Darnelle Mickens. Westbury ran a very good time of 3:25.62 while edging out Freeport at the finish line. Westbury & Freeport look again to challenge each other at the Millrose Games being held at Madison Square Garden Friday, 1/29/10. Come out and support”!

"Westbury Girls Varsity Soccer Wins Two In a Row"

9/26/09
Hempstead 0 @Westbury 3

Goals #1 & #2 scored by Ritzi Contreras (12th grade)

Goal #3 scored by Jennifer Bonilla (10th grade—first goal of her varsity career)

Westbury Goalies: 1st half: Laura Sanchez / 2nd half: Joana Vanegas

During this game, I started to see the girls working as one and using one another to their benefit. Drills and techniques learned during practice shined throughout this game. Communication, teamwork and skill could be found within in each player.

10/1/09 Westbury 5 @ Roosevelt 0

Goals #1, #2, #3, #5 scored by Ritzi Contreras

Goal #4 scored by Maribel Vanegas

Westbury Goalies: Laura Sanchez (9th grade)

Goal #3 was a highlight: Penalty kick taken by Suleyma Argueta (10th grade). Suleyma had a beautiful shot over the “wall” of girls created for as a defensive tactic. From there, Ritzi Contreras carried the ball into the net by heading it in which made the score 3-0 at that point. Although a very physical game, the girls kept their focus and never forgot about sportsmanship. This further illustrated why the team won the team sportsmanship award last season.

Meet the Captains

Ritzi Contreras
(12th grade) Ritzi was chosen as captain this year due to her dedication and love for soccer. Ritzi is at every practice and is continuously giving 110%. She responded to this role and its responsibilities by coming forward with positive motivation and tips for her teammates.

Shante Bethea
(11th grade) Shante was chosen as a captain this year for her strong leadership skills. She is not afraid to step forward and get her team in line. Also, Shante only joined the team last year, and has shown nothing but dedication since. Dispite an injury to her knee last year, Shante has pushed forward and continues to grow each day.

Laura Barthelemy
(11th grade) Laura was chosen as a captain this year for her continuous dedication to the team. Laura steps up to the plate to take on everyday responsibilities of the team. She also speaks to her teammates to keep them motivated and keep their spirits up when the game is getting tough. Laura has been called a “track star” in the past, but as the seasons go on, I find that she is using her speed to execute plays on the soccer field and has earned the name “soccer star” as well.

Coach's Insight

The girls have a real drive this season. Besides the growing number of girls coming out for the team, I have noticed that they really want to learn more about the sport and are willing to put more time into practicing when needed. Being with this program for two years now, I only see it moving up from here. If the girls keep showing the dedication that they have been this year, it will only lead to more victories in the future!

REID-ROBESON BASKETBALL CLASSIC AT WESTBURY HIGH SCHOOL SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2009

12:00 PM GIRLS VARSITY vs. MANHASSET

2:00 PM BOYS JV vs. LONG BEACH

4:00 PM BOYS VARSITY vs. LONG BEACH

Athletic and academic achievers will be on display at Long Island’s Westbury High School Saturday, February 7. The event is the annual Reid-Robeson Basketball Classic, starting at noon. The annual classic is sponsored by the athletic uniforms retailer South Shore Outdoor.

One player from each team will be honored before each game for academic achievement. It’s been part of the event since the inaugural more than two decades ago.

Admission is $5. Proceeds support a college scholarship fund for a graduating Westbury High School senior in the name of Martin S. Reid, the creator of the Reid-Robeson games. Reid, former Westbury boy’s basketball coach and assistant principal, created the event in 1986 as the Paul Robeson Games. He had in his mind a concept of “the ultimate body and the ultimate mind.”

Reid’s model was Paul B. Robeson, the actor, singer, scholar and athlete. Before his performing days, Robeson excelled in football, basketball, track and field and boxing. He was a valedictorian of his class at Rutgers University in New Jersey and received his law degree from the Columbia University. The entertainer and activist died in January 1976, and the first Robeson Classic coincided with the 10th anniversary of his death.

Reid, a 1969 graduate of Westbury High, earned his bachelor of arts from SUNY Oswego and received a master’s in school administration. A secondary-school English teacher, Reid was appointed acting assistant principal at Westbury in 1985 and got the post permanently in 1988. He became the varsity boy’s basketball coach in 1979, leading the squad to a 1985 state title as well as numerous league championships and playoff berths. He died in 1993, and his name was added to the Robeson Classic in 1994.

Westbury boys win 2008 Chaminade Christmas Tournament

Congratulations to the Westbury boys varsity basketball team for its victory over the previously undefeated and top-ranked Chaminade High School during the annual Chaminade Christmas Tournament. Four teams (Manhasset, Half Hollow Hills, Chaminade and Westbury) were battling for the championship.

In the first round, Westbury defeated Manhasset 67 to 46. The Green Dragons broke open a close game when they exploded for a 25 to 12 fourth quarter. Paris Abrams hit all four of his 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and Josh Core added 13 points and 8 rebounds.

In the championship game, Westbury played its best basketball to defeat the #1 ranked team on Long Island. The Dragons steadily pulled away with their quickness and depth, and consistently came up with clutch baskets every time Chaminade mounted a rally. Westbury lead 36 to 28 at the half. In the third quarter a 3-pointer by Lamard Herron and a put-back by Josh Core increased the lead to 16 points, but Chaminade answered with a big run to cut the lead to 4 points with five minutes remaining. Brian Hailey hit a beautiful spinning move in the post to increase the lead to 6 but Chaminade fought back again, cutting the lead to 2 with just two minutes left. The Westbury players kept their composure and a steal by Tyrece Redd pushed the lead back up to 6. A Chaminade 3-pointer cut the lead to 3 with less than 30 seconds left, but two free throws by Lamard Herron iced the game. Herron finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and was named the tournament MVP. Paris Abrams added 13 points and was named all-tournament.

"This is the first time we've beaten Chaminade in my 20 years at Westbury," said Coach Dave Graff. "The Green Dragons are now 5 and 1 and are looking forward to a successful season."

The championships will include all throwing, jumping, and running events. Bus parking will be directed to the Middle School after dropping off. Individual vehicles should use the High School south parking Lot parallel to Jericho Turnpike. We hope the entire Westbury community will come out to cheer on both the Westbury Boys and the Westbury Girls Track teams as they compete to bring home a county championship.
