Superintendent's Report - June 2008
District Updates
Thanks to the support of the parents and community the school budget passed for 2008-2009.
As a result of the
improvement in student achievement at all levels and the new designation of
High Performing,
we did not receive the renewal funds for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers after-school grant. However, we will continue to
provide after-school tutorials through the Extended Day Program. We would like to commend the Director,
Mrs. Juanita Sherwood,
site coordinators and teachers for providing many wonderful experiences for our students over the past five years.
Summer Program
The Summer School Programs, which will begin July 7, 2008, will provide rich academic experiences for our students. Parent brochures have been mailed to each home. Priority will be given to Westbury students.
Magnet Museum Academy (new)
The opening ceremony for the new Physics First Program at the Cradle of Aviation Museum was conducted on
Wednesday, June 18, 2008. We were very pleased with the support of our politicians and the Museum staff.
Mr. Brumsic Brandon, District Science Chairperson, is to be commended for his hard work, as well as
Mrs. Deadra Faulkner and district-wide committee members. It is anticipated that this program will provide students
with advanced rigor in the science and mathematics field.
District annual Report
To validate our progress as a district, The Westbury School District’s Annual Report will be distributed to the
community at various community meetings. This report describes the accomplishments both academically and
financially over the past several years, inclusive of SY 2007-08. It will be posted on our Web site.
Community Issue (Important Information)
St. Brigid’s Convent Issue
In response to a flyer that was disseminated in the community, the following are the correct facts: § The district did approach the Church about the rental of the Convent, but could not afford the amount quoted of $210,000. § The district did not make a counter offer because of the renovation cost to meet the state education code and approval. § The district chose to examine other sites which were more affordable. § The request of the Church was for pre-kindergarten and not Head Start. § The district needed five classrooms for a full-day program and space for Even Start. § The Even Start program is currently housed at the Village Recreation Center.
Facilities
Major repairs will be conducted this summer which will include a new roof for Park Avenue, a partial roof for the middle school, a new intercom for the high school and site work.
Special Program
A cohort of high school students participated in the Nassau County Police Academy Program on June 14, 2008. We were very pleased to be included in this pilot program.
